At the age of twenty Conrad moved to England with the intention of becoming an officer on British ships, and he spent the next twenty years working at sea. Although a common sailor at first, Conrad advanced quickly through the ranks, became a ships captain at the relatively young age of thirty-one, and spent three years in the Far East on a series of voyages. By the age of forty Conrad was in declining physical health and retired from the sea forever, and he worked as a popular and successful English novelist until his death in 1924.`
